Dr. Sassaman, with 40 plus years experience in the environmental field, including 13 years teaching and research and 30 years environmental consulting for both private and public sector clients, has a broad understanding of the issues associated with environmental dynamics and environmental regulations. He is experienced in dealing with priorities of the regulatory agencies as well as with the needs and constraints of the regulated community. In addition to these areas, his experience also includes health and safety planning for field operations and investigations, as well as ecology and vertebrate behavior.

His regulatory experience includes hazardous materials legislation, such as CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA, and FIFRA, worker health and safety requirements of CERCLA and OSHA, and environmental quality legislation such as NEPA and the various federal air and water regulations, as well as associated state regulations.

During the past 25 years, Dr. Sassaman has conducted multi-media exposure assessments and risk characterizations in accordance with U.S. EPA guidance under CERCLA, RCRA, TSCA, and FIFRA, as well as specific state guidance. He has performed numerous chemical fate and transport analyses in air, surface and ground water, and soil and has prepared chemical-specific toxicology profiles for major classes of chemicals. His risk assessment experience includes both human health and environmental risk assessments and remediation goal determination for a wide variety of contaminants and environmental media, including several sites under the U.S. DOE FUSRAP program.

He has evaluated environmental and technical issues associated with a variety of energy and waste disposal projects, including incineration, land filling, pipelines, oil and gas drilling, oil shale mining and retorting, coal conversion, and hydro-power and has conducted numerous environmental impact assessments and impact statements over the past 20 years, both under NEPA requirements and as part of the ecological effects evaluation for risk assessments under CERCLA and RCRA.
